Public Service Broadcasting has been the motto of All India Radio. It is a non-profit organization having been registered under section 25A of the Indian Companies Act, 1956. It is the first Indian broadcaster to gain wide international recognition for its operations. We are the country’s largest and oldest electronic media organisation in the world with the widest reach. It is also the oldest Indian private sector broadcaster with full time staff. It was established by Government of India as a temporary measure to operate the All India Radio (AIR), under the Radio Act of 1937. The government transferred it to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in March 1984.
We are a network of quality radio stations that broadcasts, a 24-hour English language news and talk radio on FM radio in most parts of India. We are the oldest English-language broadcaster in India. It is a non-profit organization run by volunteers. It is the oldest private, domestic broadcaster in India. It is the only private sector broadcaster in India that is available throughout India, 24 hours a day. We are the only private English language broadcaster, with a completely indigenous team.
Our presence is felt in all major cities of India in all local languages. We have a pan-India reach. Our radio network is the largest in the world. It is also the only such large network in India, managed by a single company. It has been in existence since 1927. We have been the only media of change, in a time when people are in need of information and news. Our services extend to all groups, communities, neighbourhoods, regions, states and the country as a whole.
The Department of Information and Broadcasting (DIB), Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India set up the AIR in 1937. It is the first broadcasting station in India. Since then, AIR has won many international and national awards for its services and programmes. Our vision is to create a society where people from all communities and regions are empowered through broadcast media and become enlightened citizens and aware community members.
